man prays working on sobriety from ibogaine treatment for heroin addiction

You Are Not Alone

It doesn’t matter how famous you are, or rich or poor, addiction does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone.

Addicts and the friends and families of addicts go through intense daily drama and heartache that comes with that addiction. Not a day goes by that you are not affected in some way or another.

The addict has to suffer through the agony of addiction and the inability to stop even though it is devastating their lives.

The parents of the addict have questions plague their minds: When did this start?  Was it something I did that contributed to my child’s addiction?  Could I have prevented it?

Parents who have actually lost a child to addiction are left wondering how they couldn’t love them through it.  How could I have saved my child?  Why couldn’t I save them?

You get lots of unsolicited advice from people.   They offer cookie-cutter treatment programs.  They tell you that “tough love” is the key.  That your child must hit “rock bottom.”  So many people offering so many opinions that you’re not sure what to do.

Have you taken the time to ask your addicted child and really listen to what they have to say?  Realize that they started using drugs because they initially liked the effect that they had.  Try to understand why your child has the behavior that they do.  It’s compensating for something.   Ask questions. You might be surprised on what they have to say.  “I didn’t feel purpose in my life” “I got left out of stuff” “I felt insecure” “I was lonely” “I was miserable”

You hear story after heart-breaking story of someone who has lost a loved one to addiction and you pray that it won’t happen to your loved one.  It is such a lonely feeling.  You feel like you have no one to talk too. Whenever you mention it to a friend or someone they don’t understand……they don’t understand at all.

NO ONE IS ALONE IN THIS!

If you can’t talk to a person, find another person. There are too many people suffering with no support. Hands of help are extended all around you. Take the first step, reach out and grasp one of those hands. It will be good for both of you. This goes for all of us no matter our age.
